Spirit of Freedom's Gunkhole Adventure 2007
June 16 - September 29 2007   1,212 nautical miles

Part Nine: Fredrick Arm, Chained Islands, Kanish Bay & Small Inlet

We were planning on heading out of Chameleon Harbor as soon as the rain let up and begin to nose our way further north. However it seemed that the Canadian Coast Guard was putting out a radio call for us; my youngest son Jeremy was ill in the hospital with an unknown cause. The CG patched me thru to the hospital via VHF as we had no cell coverage and I was able to talk to Jeremy briefly. We made the decision to move into an area with cell coverage the next day to get more details. If need be we were close to Blind Bay where I could leave Spirit with Cliff in charge and fly home. As it turns out, we did not have to do that...but decided to not go further north as Jeremy was still hospitalized. We had also talked many people returning early from the Broughton's and Alaska because the weather had been and was still horrid. So we opted instead to explore this area more and touch base with home frequently, and stay within one or two days of a place we could leave Spirit at if need be even though Jeremy insisted we not return.

This had us fooled for quite some time. It is NOT a waterfall, but actual white rock. We named it Whiterock Falls.

This is why I don't hike. This "little guy" was along the beach on Sonora Island

We found great cell coverage at the head of Nodale Channel, entering Cordero Channel.

We decided to go to Oleo's Restuarant in Fredrick Arm. We were the only customer that night. Moorage with dinner!

The "company" side of Oleo's Resturant

The "backside view" of Oleo's

A gorgeous setting, you have to give it that!

And another backside view. Oleo's is protected by a little island, they are cable-anchored between the island and the mainland.

Dinghy Touring. See the kelp? I told him not to go into it! The outboard overheated and died two miles from Oleo's. Then the oarlocks broke!

We paddled back ala canoe style against the wind. Needless to say, we were pretty hungry for dinner! Luckily after cooling completly, the engine came back to life. The oarlocks did not!

Aquaculture and Logging in Fredrick Arm

Abondoned anchors from aquaculture. They leave junk EVERYWHERE!

We left Frederick Arm and headed back to Chameleon Harbor to meet up with Sarvana again as Timber had radioed us to say that they had been on a provision run and had some fresh veggies for us! We were sorely lacking fresh veggies! We spent another couple of days back in Chameleon Harbor, watching the Dahls porpoise feed around in the anchorage, and enjoying a couple of night-time bonfires on the beach with our friends... garbage makes WONDERFUL fires! Of course we forgot our flashlights one night... no stars and no moon... we could barely find our boats!

We finally said goodbye to Timber and Pam and headed south to the Chained Islands, Kanish Bay and Small Inlet...where yet again we fell in love and spent several days in near-total isolation.

Another view up Discovery thru the Chained Islands from Kannish Bay

These islands and islets are indeed "chained" by rocks. At low tide it is very apparent!

Looking back to the entrance to Small Inlet

Fog over the entrance to Small Inlet, viewed from inside...so is it the exit now?

Dinghy tour in Small Inlet

Cliff & Angel playing on a small islet inside Small Inlet. This is the only way I will go ashore and play without worrying about bears!! TINY ISLETS!

This is typical of the shoreline of the little islets in Small Inlet

And yet another islet

Kanish Bay & Small Inlet are on Quadra Island...just across from Waiatt Bay & the Octopus Islands. It is a 1/2 mile hike to Waiatt Bay.
