Spirit of Freedom's Gunkhole Adventure 2009
June 12 - October 11, 2009   1,615.4 nautical miles

Part Ten: The West Coast of Vancouver Island August 8-28
The Fifth Leg: Clayoquat Sound to Barkley Sound, The Broken Group

August 22  We left Hot Springs Cove and headed through fog and rain to Tofino. We didn't see any of Clayoquat Sound, too foggy--very disappointing. After clearing Hayden Passage we floated in Miller Channel while cooking and eating breakfast, having  left before breakfast to make the slack. We then motored (no wind, just fog and rain) through Calmus Passage, then Maurus Channel and into Father Charles Channel finally arriving in Tofino, still raining and some fog. After getting fuel (strong currents in the shallow harbor!) we rafted up at Weigh West Marina. Afternoon came, the sky cleared and it turned into a gorgeous day. We walked the town, finding it very busy and big-city-like; then we went to the grocery store and stocked up. BJ and Tricia treated us to a lovely dinner at an excellent restaurant they had been to before, it was so good!

August 23 We left Tofino Harbor, under a clear and sunny sky, quite different from when we arrived the day before! The entrance to the harbor is very shallow, with scatter islets about and lots of reefs with waves breaking over them. It is so pretty!

After we cleared the harbor, we had a wonderful sail, no, make that a great sail to Barkley Sound. BJ did some fishing, but didn't catch anything. We did spot one whale, and saw several commercial fishing boats along the way, as well as lots of sport boats.  Cliff was at the helm, working his way (under BJ's watchful eye) through the rocks and reefs and breakers, which are throughout the Broken Group in Barkley Sound. We dropped anchor in Effingham Bay, Effingham Island,  with three other boats. BJ and Cliff hopped into the dinghy and set out for some exploring before dark. When they got back we had dinner, and settled in for the night, with a beautiful sunset, planning on hiking the island and exploring the area by dink the next day.
