Spirit of Freedom's Gunkhole Adventure 2009
June 12 - October 11, 2009   1,615.4 nautical miles

Part One: The Departure and Plan: Circumnavigation of Vancouver Island via the Broughtons

We "officially" departed on our adventure from Port Ludlow, WA on June 12. Unofficially we had departed from our homeport of Port of Grapeview a month prior, sailing to Pt. Ludlow where BJ helped with some needed repairs, and then back to Port Orchard to have a rendezvous with CASCADIA,  which was hosted by us. Unfortunately, I became ill with the flu and was unable to attend. However, Spirit evidently hosted the gathering without her crew! It looks like everybody must have had a good time!

After I recovered,  Dad (Glenn) and I did some final prep on Spirit, including Dad installing a lovely knife rack and medicine cabinet he built, and we set off for Port Ludlow, sailing most of the way.

We finally managed our official departure on June 12, from Port Ludlow with Clifford, myself (Pamela), Glenn, Angel, Scupper and DC  aboard.

It was going to be a full load! Dad and I were going to be on all the time; Cliff would be on for most of the time, flying back to work twice, then rejoining Spirit in Port Hardy along with BJ to head down the West Side of Vancouver Island. Tricia, was planning on joining for at least part, if not all of the trip on the west side. So... five adults, two dogs and one cat... off on another adventure! Cruising up through the San Juan Islands, into the Gulf Islands, crossing the Strait of Georgia, visiting Desolation Sound, doing some exploring on the east side of Johnston Strait and then into the Broughtons for a month. Then crossing the Queen Charlotte Strait back to Vancouver Island to meet with BJ and Clifford at Port Hardy, and then up around Cape Scott and down the outside (west side) of Vancouver Island, having Tricia join us at some point still-to-be-determined, visiting the various sounds along the way and ultimately dropping crew in either Victoria BC or Port Angeles, WA. Then Clifford, Dad and I would head back for another month of cruising, possibly back up to Desolation Sound. What a summer ahead!
